Oil goes through the oil filter all the time, adapter has safety pressure relief valve so engine is never starved for oil. It is a dual purpose pressure relief/bias valve to prevent oil starvation to the engine. It will reduce the flow of engine oil to the cooler to a large extent when the engine oil is cold and thick. The oil is biased to the filter instead of the cooler when the engine oil is cold.
